“Owru Yari” means the last day – 31st December – of every year in Sranan Tongo.
Last days of year 2011 was also really funny and full with many events same as earlier years in every where at Paramaribo, Suriname / South America.
The Chinese tradition of fireworks blended with an Afro-Surinamese tradition then everyone ready to kick old year and its bad spirits with loud firecrackers – bombel , pagara in Sranan Tongo – and continuing with fireworks during nights, especially when the clocks shows noon at 31st of December, 12:00 to start fresh new one. So loud, louder, more more louder pagaras are more better and prestigious.
My post includes more then 100 photos from last few days of December 2011, of course mostly from the last day, 31st December 2011 and most famous event “OWRU YARI” street party while firing zillions of firecrackers on the main streets of city.
Then we went to Leonsberg with one of my friend Brian Sloote. My friends invited me to their “Owru Yari Party” at Leonsberg. We got some refreshments and tasted delicious snacks, BBQ’s from “Warung Martha”, a traditional Surinamese cooking restaurant – located at the corner of pier path – while capturing year 2011’s last frames.
I used sort of lenses with my Nikon D2Xs ;
- AF Nikkor 35mm f/2.0D
- Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D AF
- Zeiss Makro-Planar T* f/2 100mm ZF.2 manual focus lens
All photos captured in NEF (RAW) and converted to JPG with Capture NX2 in a batch process without any manual touch.
