6th Telesur Srefidensi Marathon Suriname

The Telesur Srefidensi Marathon Suriname, the traditional marathon sponsored by state owned telecommunication company TeleSur, the Ministry of Defense and the Suriname Army, took place here today in Paramaribo. Paramaribo, Suriname, 21st November 2009.

Telesur Srefidensi (*) Marathon Suriname held on the 21st of November 2009. This traditional marathon sponsored by state owned telecommunication company TeleSur and as usually by Ministry of Defense and Suriname Army.

Telesur Srefidensi Marathon Suriname is an international event where the Surinamese people are looking forward to invite all the marathon athletes from neighbor countries and other countries from all over the world.

The official ceremony started with Telesur Managing Director Dirk Curry and Minister of Defense Ivan FERNALD’s speeches. Athletes supplied with local fruits, drinks, transportation as usual and also water on the route with paramedics by organization. Military Polices and Korps Politie Suriname were in charge together on 42.2 km length of the marathon route.

SREFIDENSI (*) The word of Srefidensi is a Sranan-Tongo word that describes Independence.

Sranan (also Sranan Tongo “Surinamean tongue”, Surinaams, Surinamese, Suriname Creole, Taki Taki) is a creole language spoken as a Lingua Franca by approximately 400,000 people in Suriname. It is the mother tongue of the Creoles. Sranan was previously called nengre or negerengels (Dutch, “negroenglish”).
Since this language is shared between the Dutch, Javanese, Hindustani and Chinese speaking communities. Most Surinamese speak it as a Lingua Franca.
